A Needless Annoyance
Getting into debt these days is not difficult. People defaulting on loans is not difficult to find among the most frugal of us. The position they are in deserve sympathy, but will not help in getting people out of the mess they are in. Debt comes with the annoying debt collectors, and it can be very stressful indeed. It is their job to collect money owed from a debtor. Showing signs of sympathy may be too hard, as they appear tough. As they too are human, they get frustrated themselves facing the frustrations of people. There must be a way for these interactions to be handled effectively without involving major problems?
Debt Collection is Big Business
Debt collection is a lucrative business. They want to collect payment on a debt that you owe that they may have bought from the original creditor. They will try anything they can, as long as it is legal, to make the collection. As they make money off their collection efforts, they do all they can to annoy the debtor out of his money for the debt. They may make regular calls or threaten legal action to get what they want. The law outlines what an agency can do in order to collect a debt. Debtors have the same type of laws protecting their interests as well.
Do Not Panic
Most debtors panic when they start receiving calls from a collection agency, which is what they should never do. A debtor can demand, in writing, the name of the creditor from the collection agency. Debtors have a right to dispute any amount of money quoted them. A letter should be written to dispute the amount of money owed, along with inquiries for settlement options. Agencies will call you at home or at work to collect on a debt. Debt collectors who call you during the illegal hours of 9 PM and 8 AM can, and should, be reported. Sending out a letter to them can restrict them from doing this. Your debt still must be paid, but they can no longer call you about it.
Credit Counseling Service
One last option is to go to a credit counseling agency to settle your debts without going to court. A debt collector cannot enforce a wage garnishment on you, no matter how much they threaten you. Any collector who does this needs to be reported for harassment. It is not a question that you have to pay your debts still. Slow down, think, and create a plan to redeem your situation before you destroy it beyond all help.
