Confidentiality – Disclosure to a Patient’s Family

One aspect of health attention that makes tremendous concern for patients is personal health data, specifically disclosure of that data to third parties. Physician-patient confidentiality is a cornerstone of medical practice and of the relationship between physicians and their patients. This confidentiality allows patients to be completely candid with their physicians in giving their medical histories and in explaining symptoms and distress. Except in certain circumstances, patients must specifically consent to disclosure of data about their health attention before a treating physician is at liberty to discuss that data with anyone, including a patient’s family.
