Probation can be granted instead of incarceration, along with other penalties. In other cases (typically for juvenile or first age offenders), it is offered as part of “delayed sentencing”, where after an individual successfully completes their probation, they avoid a criminal conviction on their record. This probation action is called “community supervision” in many states.
