The 80 million Baby Boomers in the USA will commence qualifying for complete Social Security benefits in early 2012. Many have already applied for “early” benefits. However Social Security, immediately the largest single item in the US federal budget, is in serious distress. The Social Security Administration’s own projections exhibit the program will deplete the Trust Fund within the following hardly any years. Most Americans know small about the origins of Social Security or how it is financed. Alike benefits for aging citizens in other Western nations are facing the same challenges.
