Throughout various times in history, national currencies were backed by precious metals. Most recently, the gold average was re-established after Earth War II when a system of fixed exchange rates was instituted. In 1971, the US administration officially stopped using this system. Since then, currencies based on a absolute commodity haven’t been used. Their values are based on supply and demand.
